The HELP ZONE is designed to give students a place to look, online, to get the information they need to complete the task at hand.

 

The HELP ZONE will contain information about specific math topics that we have covered or are currently working on. 

 

INTEGERS

Integers are the set of whole numbers, their opposites and zero. 

 

ABSOLUTE VALUE

* Absolute value is the DISTANCE a number is from zero on a number line.

Distance is ALWAYS positive, so the absolute value of a number is ALWAYS POSITIVE.

When solving expressions involving absolute value, do what is INSIDE the absolute value signs FIRST, then evaluate your expression.

 

ADDING INTEGERS

* If the signs are the SAME, ADD the numbers and give your answer the SAME sign.

* If the signs are DIFFERENT, SUBTRACT the numbers and give your answer the sign of the larger number.

 

SUBTRACTING INTEGERS

* REWRITE each example using KEEP, CHANGE, CHANGE

KEEP the first number the same.

CHANGE the subtraction to addition.

CHANGE the secong number to its opposite

THEN follow the rules of addition

 

MULTIPLYING AND DIVIDING INTEGERS

* THE RULES FOR MULTIPLYING AND DIVIDING INTEGERS ARE THE SAME.

Do normal multiplication or division.  If the signs are the SAME, the answer is POSITIVE.

If the signs are DIFFERENT, the answer is NEGATIVE.

 

 

FRACTIONS, DECIMALS, PERCENTS

Factors are two or more numbers that are multiplied together to form a product.

Multiples are the product of a number and any whole number.  Multiples are what we count by.

A prime number is a whole number, greater than 1 that has EXACTLY 2 DIFFERENT factors, 1 and itself.

A composite number is a whole number, greater than 1 that has more than 2 factors.

Prime factorization is the process of writing ANY composite number as a product of prime numbers.  A FACTOR TREE can be used to find the prime factorization.

  

Greatest Common Factor (GCF).  To find the GCF, do the following

a.  List ALL the factors of each number

b.  Circle ALL the common factors

c.  Name the GREATEST common factor

  

We simplify fractions by dividing both the numerator and denominator by the same factor.

  

FRACTION, DECIMAL, PERCENT CONVERSIONS

 

 Changing a fraction to a decimal

Divide the numerator by the denominator

  

Changing a decimal to a fraction

Read the decimal using the place value name and write what you say

  

Changing a fraction to a percent

numerator divided by denominator times 100

  

Changing a percent to a fraction

Put the percent over 100 and simplify

  

Changing a decimal to a percent

Move the decimal TWO places to the RIGHT

 

Changing a percent to a decimal

Move the decimal TWO places to the LEFT

 

 

ADDING and SUBTRACTING FRACTIONS or MIXED NUMBERS

 

a.  Find a common denominator

b.  Create equivalent fractions with NEW numerators

c.  Add or Subtract numerators ONLY (Add or Subtract whole numbers if working with mixed numbers)

d.  Simplify, if necessary

 

  MULTIPLYING FRACTIONS or MIXED NUMBERS

 

a.  Convert ALL mixed numbers to improper fractions

b.  Multiply STRAIGHT ACROSS

c.  Simplify, if necessary

 ***If you know how, you may cross simplify AFTER step a***

DIVIDING FRACTIONS or MIXED NUMBERS

 

a.  Convert ALL mixed numbers to improper fractions

b.  REWRITE as a multiplication example using KEEP CHANGE CHANGE

KEEP the first fraction, CHANGE the division to multiplication and CHANGE or FLIP the second fraction to its reciprocal

c.  Multiply STRAIGHT ACROSS

d.  Simplify, if necessary
