1. CALL TO ORDER AND PLEDGE TO THE FLAG

Mr. Perugino called the meeting to order at 7:03 p.m. The group joined in the Pledge to the Flag.

2. ADOPTION OF THE AGENDA

MOTION: To adopt the agenda as presented. Motion Raymond Engle seconded Roxanne Perugino, motion passed unanimously.

3. APPROVAL OF MINUTES

MOTION: To approve the minutes of the regular meeting of May 11, 2011. Motion Roxanne Perugino seconded Gerard Bourbonniere, motion passed unanimously.

MOTION: To approve the amended minutes of the special meeting of May 18, 2011. Motion Gerard Bourbonniereseconded Roxanne Perugino, motion passed unanimously.

4. PRESENTATION

Mr. Lovely called upon Ms. Bart and Mrs. Battisto to introduce the Teacher of the year – Suzette Andrade.

Mr. Perugino presented the outgoing student representatives, Bryan Kamens and Michael Mastracchio, with a small gift for their service on the Board.

Terryville High School – Connecticut Light & Power award of a $5,000 grant for finishing as a runner-up in the 2010/2011 Live Green – Win Green video and essay contest.

Dr. Distasio Superintendent of Schools acknowledged PTSA Reflections National Award Winner for the Reflections Essay Contest, Julia Salinger.

Mr. Perugino presented a small gift to Charise Hoyt in appreciation for attending the Board Meetings and signing for Mr. Meehan.

5. PUBLIC COMMENTS REGARDING AGENDA ITEMS

None

6. COMMUNICATIONS

Mr. Perugino read a note the Board received from the Plymouth/Terryville PTSA Council wherein they thanked the Board for their support this year with respect to the Reflections Program and the 5th Grade Spelling Bee and the PTSA Council is looking forward to the coming year.

7. OLD BUSINESS

8. NEW BUSINESS

A. End of the Year Transfer of Funds

MOTION: To authorize the Superintendent of Schools to make the necessary transfers and expenditures to close the books as of June 30, 2011, and to expend all appropriate funds for the fiscal year 2010 – 2011. Motion Martin Wetzel seconded Roxanne Perugino motion passed unanimously.

B. Participation in the National School Lunch Program

MOTION: To approve the authorization of the administration to participate in the National School Lunch Program for the 2011 – 2012 school years. Motion Raymond Engle seconded Anthony Orsini motion passed unanimously.

C. Authorization to Hire

MOTION: To authorize the Superintendent of Schools to hire personnel, except administrators, during the months of July and August in conjunction with the Personnel Subcommittee Chair. Motion Martin Wetzel seconded Daniel Santorso motion passed unanimously.

D. Approval of Food Service Provider

MOTION: To approve Chartwell’s Food Service Provider to again provide the food services operations for the Plymouth Public Schools beginning July 1, 2011and continuing through June 30, 2012. Motion Raymond Engleseconded Roxanne Perugino motion passed unanimously.

E. Appointments

MOTION: To appoint Mollie Moe to the position of Language Arts Teacher at Eli Terry Jr. Middle School effective August 22, 2011. Motion Martin Wetzel seconded Gerard Bourbonniere, motion passed unanimously.

MOTION: To appoint Brian Rosano to the position of Social Studies Teacher at Eli Terry Jr. Middle School effective August 22, 2011. Motion Gerard Bourbonniere, seconded Anthony Orsini, motion passed unanimously.

MOTION: To appoint Stephanie Hudak, to the position of English Teacher at Terryville High School effective August 22, 2011. Motion Daniel Santorso seconded Gerard Bourbonniere, motion passed unanimously.

MOTION: To appoint Geoffrey Brencher, to the position of Technology Teacher at Terryville High School effective August 22, 2011. Motion Anthony Orsini seconded Martin Wetzel motion passed unanimously.

MOTION: To appoint Tatum Sherwood to the position of Varsity Girls’ Soccer Coach at Terryville High School for the 2011 season. Motion Gerard Bourbonniere, seconded Roxanne Perugino motion passed unanimously.

F. Resignation

Dr. Distasio informed Board Members that he has accepted the resignation of Damon Papp Mathematics Teacher at Eli Terry Jr. Middle School effective May 23, 2011.

9. BOARD MEMBER/COMMITTEE REPORTS

  1. Curriculum – Mrs. Kulesa, Chair

Mrs. Kulesa reported on the following:

The Curriculum Subcommittee met on June 1, 2011 at 6:00 p.m. The following items were discussed: (1) Terryville High School Course Additions for 2011 – 2012 school years – The program of studies for the 2011-2012 school year was presented to the subcommittee. The document is used by students and guidance counselors to plan individual student schedules. Several additions have been added to the Program of Studies this school year due to the changes in scheduling. Mr. Lovely highlighted and discussed the new courses; (2) New Textbook Adoptions – Mr. Lovely informed subcommittee members that new textbooks will need to be purchased for some of the new course offerings. However, no action was taken at this time. The hard copies were not available for review, but will be over the summer and prior to August. The new textbooks will be adopted at the regular Board of Education Meeting in August.; and (3) Inform Presentation – A presentation of the Inform Data Warehouse Progress Monitoring Software Program was made by Mr. Lovely. The program allows the teachers to track student assessment data over time in order to make instructional decisions.

  1. Facilities – Mr. Engle, Chair

The Facilities Subcommittee met prior to the Board Meeting and approved the purchase of a Donor Plaque from Laurentano to be placed in the hallway and the subcommittee chair is waiting for further information from Laurentano with respect to a second plaque for Board Members.

C. Finance – Mr. Bourbonniere, Chair

The Finance Subcommittee met prior to the Board of Education Meeting and reviewed the accounts by facilities report for the month of May and moved that it be forwarded to the Town of Plymouth Board of Finance.

The Finance Subcommittee approved forwarding the transfers for the month of May to the full Board for their approval. The following motion was made:

MOTION: I recommend that a two (2) year contract for busing for regular education and magnet school education be award to the Worhunsky Bus Company. Motion Roxanne Perugino, seconded Martin Wetzel. At this time the Chair instituted a roll call: Mr. Orsini, Mrs. Perugino,

Mr. Santorso, Mr. Wetzel, Mr. Bourbonniere, Mrs. Kulesa and the Chair voted yes. Mr. Berube, voted no and Mr. Engle, abstained Motion passed.

D. Negotiations – Mr. Wetzel, Chair

Mr. Wetzel entertained the following motion:

MOTION: I recommend the approval of a one year contract to Mr. Peter Lovely, Director of Curriculum & Instruction for a salary of $83,461 for the 2011 – 2012 school years. Motion Roxanne Perugino, seconded GerardBourbonniere, motion passed unanimously.

E. Personnel – Mrs. Perugino Chair

Mrs. Perugino reported all items were addressed under new business.

F. Policy – Mr. Berube, Chair

G. Safety & Transportation – Mr. Orsini, Chair

No Report – Comment – school year is ending in a positive note. Things are moving very smoothly and safely.

H. Education Connection - Mrs. Kulesa

No Report

I. Student Representatives

Tyler Tarnowicz reported on the following: (1) a tornado relief fund was set up through Terryville High School and raised a total of $683 for the Habitat for Humanity in Birmingham, Alabama; (2) final exams will begin tomorrow and will run until Tuesday, June 14th; (3) graduation will be held on Wednesday, June 15th; (4) orientation for incoming freshmen and their parents will take place at the high school at 7 p.m. (5) last Thursday a music concert was put on by the THS chorus and band and they received a standing ovation from the audience. and (6) Video of past

trips and occasions were put together by a student in order to send off this year’s seniors.

Bryan Kamens reported on the following: (1) congratulations to the Boys’ Baseball and Track Teams on their season; (2) congratulations to the Girls’ Softball Team. They will be competing in the state championship this Friday. A fan bus will be available for any students who wish to attend the game. The game starts at 7 o’clock. and (3) The Sports Banquet was held on June 1st. The athletes were honored for their dedication and performances throughout the seasons.

Michael Mastracchio reported on the following: (1) last month the senior class hosted the 1st Annual Block Party at the high school in the cafeteria. There were games, dancing and pie throwing. Thank you to those teachers who allowed the students to toss pies at them. (2) May 27th, Class Trip to Holiday Hill, a good time was had by all; (3) last night was Senior Class Night and was catered by Sunrise Deli. The seniors received their yearbooks; watched their class video in the auditorium and each senior received a gift and a 2011duffel bag. (4) June 14th the seniors have their class breakfast and (5) June 15th is graduation.

10. ADMINISTRATIVE REPORTS/REQUESTS/INFORMATION

Mr. Meehan, Director of Pupil Personnel

The Apple Program Summer School will be running for 5 weeks from June 20th to July 21st. The elementary school students will be housed at Plymouth Center School and the middle school students will be housed at the high school. Middle School Summer School is for 3 weeks from June 27th – July 14th for the pre-k, K, first and second grades special ed students will come for 3 weeks from 8:30 a.m. – 11 a.m. The 5 week program goes from 8:30 a.m. – 12 noon.

Mr. Lovely – Director of Curriculum and Instruction/District Administrator In Charge

Mr. Lovely reported on summer school – (a) elementary summer school for grades 3-5 will take place at Plymouth Center School and is a three (3) week program; (b) the middle school program will take place at Eli Terry Jr. Middle School and the high school program will take place at Terryville High. This is a 5 week program/19 days/and there is a cost for these programs, students are notified by school administration and guidance counselors. and (c) reminder from the Early Childhood Council – Community Meeting – June 16th from 5:30 p.m. – 7:30 p.m. at Town Hall.

Mr. Trudeau, Director of Technology

Mr. Trudeau thanked Jeff, Tyler, Josh, Erin and Bryan for helping with the Plymouth 16th live broadcast tonight.

He thanked the law firm of Secor, Cassidy & McPartland, P.C. for their generous donation of computers.

Senior computer training was organized by Mr. Orsini and Mrs. McBaine and was held on Tuesday at the high school. Laura was assisted by support specialists, Jeff Telke and Bryan Shane. Feed back was very exciting. The classes will be running Tuesday and Thursday of this week and Tuesday and Thursday of next week for one hour in the library computer lab. Surfing the internet, micro word, word processing, and word document were explored.

Mr. Perugino thanked Mr. Trudeau and the group for going down and helping out the seniors.

Mr. Sangotatta, Business Manager

The Finance Subcommittee met earlier in the evening. We reported the fiscal year is winding down. It’s been a good fiscal year for us. We are very pleased with the accounts and the status of the district. June is a very busy month that we have in the district. On the buildings and grounds side, there are a number of summer projects, i.e. lighting projects and plans to upgrade facilities.

Dr. Distasio reported the following:

The last day of school is on Wednesday, June 15h. Promotion exercises at Eli Terry Jr. Middle School will be held at 10 a.m. while the graduation ceremony will be held at 7 p.m. at Terryville High School. The last 3 days of school (June 13th, 14th, & 15th ) are shortened days and no lunches will be served.

On behalf of the Plymouth Board of Education, Dr. Distasio thanked administrators, teachers, students and staff for another wonderful and productive school year. He also thanked the administrators and staff for the cost savings measures they supported throughout the district.

Congratulations to Mrs. Auidi, this year’s recipient of the Zukowski Family Foundation Award. The award is in the amount of $1,000 and can be used at her discretion for her program.

May 26th was the date of the Annual Scholarship Night at Terryville High School. Approximately, $245,000 in scholarships were awarded that

night to students. Dr. Distasio thanked the community for their kind donations.

On behalf of the Board of Education, Dr. Distasio thanked administrators, teachers, students and parents for another wonderful year in our school district. It was an extremely busy year but very positive.

In closing, Dr. Distasio thanked the members of the Plymouth Board of Education for their support throughout the year. Due to their hard work and that of the staff, not only was the district able to come in with a 0% increase in the budget for next year, but this was done without losing a single program or staff member. Many thanks were extended for their continued support, encouragement and caring and for all they do for the kids of our community.

Best Wishes to all for a restful and enjoyable summer.

The last meeting took place on May 31st. The organization does have a Treasurer for next year; however, the organization is still looking for a President for the PTSA for next year. If no one steps up as President, there will be financial ramifications.

The Aftergrad party is all set.

Mr. Orsini– Eli Terry Jr. Middle School – June 2, 2011 (last meeting for this school year)

Mr. Orsini presented the following end of the year school activities:

  • A Grade 8 Awards Program took place yesterday.
  • A Grade 8 field trip to Boulder Ridge took place today.
  • On June 9th Grade 6 Field Day will be held at the middle school from 8:30 a.m. – 11 a.m. A 6th Grade Math Game Night will be held from 5 p.m. – 7 p.m.
  • One June 10th the Grade 6 Band will be on a field trip to Boston, the Grade 7 students will participate in a field day, and a Grade 8 Dinner Dance will be held starting at 6 p.m.
  • On June 13th yearbooks will be handed out to the 8th graders; from 9:15 a.m. – 10:15 a.m. a Grade 7 Awards Program will take place.
  • On June 14th yearbooks will be distributed to the 6thand 7th Graders. There will be a Grade 6 Awards Program from 9:15 a.m.- 10:15 a.m.
  • June 15th is the last day of school. 8th Grade Graduation will start at 10 a.m.
  • On August 22nd there will be an orientation for incoming 6th Graders and any new 7th or 8th Grade Students.
  • August 25th is the first day of school for the 2011 – 2012 school years.

The next PTA meeting will be held on Thursday, September 1st at 7 p.m.

Dr. Distasio – PTA Council

Dr. Distasio reported that the PTA Council met on May 17th. He encouraged the parents to get involved with their school’s PTA’s. We need parents to get involved. These organizations do a wonderful work on behalf of our children. He personally thanked the PTA’s for their support throughout the school year. Mrs. Jaworski we appreciate all you do for the students in our school district.

Dr. Distasio explained that an important letter has been placed on all of the school websites as well as the district website and was sent home with students addressing the prediction of the temperatures for tomorrow. Should those predictions come true, he indicated there may be an early dismissal. The outline of the early dismissals, if the predictions come true, is as follows:

Terryville High School – regular day (climate controlled)

Eli Terry Jr. Middle School – dismissal @11 a.m. no lunches

Plymouth Center School & Harry S. Fisher Elementary School - dismissal @ 11:45 a.m. no lunches

AM Kindergarten and AM Pre-School – dismissal @10:30 a.m.

No PM Kindergarten or PM Pre-School

dismissal at 10:30 a.m.

If there is an early dismissal, Dr. Distasio indicated he would send out an AlertNow between the hours of 8:30 a.m. – 9:00 a.m. and the above schedule will be followed.

13. FINAL BOARD COMMENTS (if any)

Mr. Berube – Thanked Mrs. Andrade for the wonderful job she does in the classroom. Thanked his fellow Board Members, Dr. Distasio, Mr. Santogatta, and Mr. Lovely. He indicated it has been a pleasure working with them. They are very professional and they all have the benefits of the students at heart which he very much appreciates.

Mr. Engle – Congratulated Mrs. Andrade for receiving the Teacher of the Year Award. He indicated the concert the other night was fantastic, great job. Mr. Engle congratulated the seniors, wished them good luck and indicated that a great summer is coming up.

Mr. Orsini – Congratulated Mrs. Andrade. Wished the two seniors, Brian and Mike, good luck. Congratulated Julia Salinger.

Mrs. Perugino – Congratulated Suzette and all of the graduating seniors. She wished them the best of luck in college and in life. Mrs. Perugino thanked the administrators and teachers, and indicated they’ve done a great job this year. Best Wishes for a happy, healthy and safe summer.

Mr. Santorso – Wished that everyone have a great last week of school and a good summer, too.

Mr. Wetzel – Congratulated Suzette and indicated she was deserving of the award. It’s been great working with the Board. Best wishes to the

graduating senior representatives and hoped that they succeed in whatever they plan to do.

Mr. Bourbonniere – Congratulated Mrs. Andrade, Julia Salinger, Marty and his crew, hoped everyone in the school system has a great summer. Mr. Bourbonniere commented on his attendance in Waterbury at the Connecticut Student Film Festival. The Terryville High School Digital Medial Three Classes was nominated in 3 categories. Congratulations to those students that put this together.

Mrs. Kulesa – Congratulated all the graduates and told them to enjoy the next phase of their lives. Some day they will look back to these days as the best days they’ve ever had.

Mr. Perugino – Congratulated the Teacher of the Year, Mrs. Andrade and Mrs. Aiudi for receiving the Foundations Award, Marty and his group for doing a great job. He wished the two student representatives, Brian and Mike, the best. Thanked Charise for attending all of the meetings, it’s really appreciated. She wished everyone a good summer. Mrs. Perugino indicated that we’ve accomplished a lot this year. She thanked the people of Plymouth/Terryville. There was an outstanding amount in scholarships, $245,000. There’s nothing like a small town.

Dr. Distasio announced the new student representatives for next year are: Tim King and Vannesa Kello.

14. NEXT REGULAR BOARD MEETING

Mr. Perugino stated the next Regular Board of Education Meeting will be held on the August 11, 2011 at 7 p.m., Terryville High School cafeteria.
